The Adventures of the 12U’s in Las Cruces, New MexicoLas Cruces (1 August - 5 August) Re-Cap Provided by Sue Wynn Friday, August 3rdThis morning we had our first bracket game against Las Vegas Majestic. BV began to pull ahead in the 3rd due to some strong hits and the game ended with a score of 13-0. In the afternoon many families headed out to White Sands National Park. We all did not know what to expect but our trusty ranger Uncle Chuck showed us the way. When we got there we all proceeded into the gift shop and bought snow saucers. From there we drove about five miles farther into the park where we spotted blinding, white sand dunes. Everyone from ages 4-70 climbed up the huge hill and slid down in style. No one got more air than little Elijah, it pays off to only weigh 50 pounds. If you are ever wondering what sand tastes like you should ask Mary Lou, Ken, or Lance. We were all covered but it was so worth it. After, some of the parents went to the White Sands Missile Museum. Ed was really curious what training was necessary to be a guided missile pilot. Tonight the girls once again have an early curfew and our next game is against Poway at 10:45 AM. Wish us luck! [Reminder: Add photos here]Thursday, August 2nd We all were able to sleep in which was a blessing because with the time change getting up for an 8 AM game is not an easy feat. After the bracket seating meeting we were all pleased to know that we had the day off Everyone headed off in different directions. Many went to the movies and if you’re looking for a movie to teach your kids everything you didn’t want them to know, take them to I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry. I give it a thumbs up even though mine smells like plastic. Later in the day we had a short batting practice at a nearby park and we saw our long time nemesis WAGS practicing. Hi Todd! After everyone got back and cooled down, we enjoyed a catered Mexican fiesta thanks to Andrea, Emily, Yolanda, and others I’m sure I’m failing to mention and made it into bed just in time for the girls’ early curfew. Wednesday, August 1st The games will begin!!!!!The girls were up and going early this AM and made a great showing against Sting. We came out and finished strong, 9-0. Next game… 8 PM against Burlingame. An entire day before we play again. The girls went to see Hairspray, John Travolta steals the show. Then a quick craft to make signs for their door, hosted by our first grade teacher Kelly. After our craft we relaxed and headed off to our next game which began later than expected. The girls came out ready to play and won 9-0. Tuesday, July 31st. Our first official tournament activitiy.Mary Lou went off to the draw luncheon and we met her afterwards for our official sign in. A bit too long in the sun but we got ‘r done. Then out to the field for our official / mandatory photos. Back to the hotel for some cool down and rest before opening ceremonies. Our fields are nice but not like those you generally think of as the Field of Dreams fields. No painted fans in the outfield. Opening ceremonies were fine but I think only the girls saw them. Lot’s of people so seeing the girls was next to impossible. Short and sweet. Very little girl that sang the national anthem which was pretty brave. Dinner on our own as our first game will be at 8 AM on Wednesday against Sting from the Berkeley / Alameda area. Monday, July 30thAfter a well deserved night’s sleep, our families struck out and got the lay of the land. With a population of 74,000 it’s not too hard to find your way around. Good news…Wal-Mart and Starbucks with a drive through (Kelly is tickled) are just about a half a mile away. Don’t ask how many trips we have all made over there to get our provisions in order. It just seems to up and rain at the drop of the hat. I haven’t seen the temp above 92 but it is a bit humid. Practiced today at 1 near the 10U fields. Mary Lou pitched batting practice and the girls had them flying. We parents sat in the stands with a nice breeze, occasional raindrops, our trusty seeds and just relaxed. Yolanda’s friend from the area recommended a place name Farley’s for a team dinner. We all ventured over there. Pizza, burgers, video games, pool tables, etc. The girls had a big table in the middle and actually sat long enough to get some food down. OK, some of us have found a bit of an obsession with a dessert place called Caliche’s. It’s frozen custard which is a lot like Dairy Queen but I think better. As well as Desert Ice, flavors like mango, lemon, strawberry; very refreshing. We’re on vacation so it’s OK! Back to the breakfast room for game night: spoons, Yahtzee, Uno and coloring. Yes coloring is fun at all ages. Sunday, July 29thThe 12’s started their adventure in San Diego with a nearly 10 hour drive across the desert to our destination. A couple (Chuck and Larry) attempted to fly but with over-sleeping, over-booking or which story you choose to believe, also joined us all on the road. You hear about rain and flash-flooding in the desert, well believe it! The Wynn’s started their journey on Saturday and after 14 hours, a visit to the “eye of a hurricane”, a mishap with a semi truck full of grapes and 2 and a half hours of quality time with the state trooper, were the first to arrive. Luckily all safe and sound, just a little body work will be required at home. Most of us are at the Marriott Springhill with a few across the road at the La Quinta. We are sharing our hotel with Pleasanton Phantom (10U and 12U), Rocklin Thundercats (12U), and PQ (10U). Not really as crazy as you might think. August 1st, 2007 11:59 pm Rain Can't Stop Us! :)We beat Burlingame in 5 innings 9-0 tonight. Late start due to rain. We have our draw at noon tomorrow, most likely first bracket will be on Friday. Tomorrow is for relaxation and a New Mexican dinner by the pool. Vista (June 15-17) Re-Cap Provided by Sue Wynn Game Four - Bonita Valley 4 Los Alamitos 3 (W)Today we played Los Al in the finals and broke a tie in the bottom of the 7th to win a hard fought battle. Mary Lou had the girls celebrate by having them pose with their dads, grand-dads and uncles for Father's Day. |
