Photo FAQ PHOTO FAQ

Here are the questions that I get asked frequently when I'm out shooting photos.

Why is it taking so long for you to take pictures of our team?

I have to shoot 64 teams this year. I try to get to all the teams at least once and still go to my daughter's games. I try to post a tentative schedule but the rain messes things up a bit. Also, remember that I'm doing this by myself. You can always send in photos that you took with your point and shoot camera. I shot the entire 2002 All-Star season with a kodak DC290 (a whopping 2.1 megapixel camera).

I saw you taking pictures today but when I went on the website it said, 'sorting' and no picture link

The process goes like this:

  • Loading
  • Sorting
  • Flip Portrait/Landscape
  • Renaming
  • Re-sizing/Thumbs
  • Paging
  • Upload to Website
  • This takes a quite of bit of time. If you go to the links page and check out the other leagues, you'll notice that nobody comes close to having as many photos on their site.

Why are the pictures so small when I click the thumbnail?

We have a lot more people visiting the site and the photo page is very popular. We get charged by how much data is transferred. If we exceed the limit, then nobody will be able to reach the site. I scaled the photos based traffic (300-850 visitors a day)

2007 Season - We've upgraded our storage and I have made the photos larger 700x467.

What happened to all the photos that were up before (Rec/All-Stars)

Before we had our website hosted by COX. We out grew that so we switched over to a business site that could handle the traffic. Unfortunately, COX doesn't do nightly back ups on their servers for 'personal' websites. The processed content is gone for good. I have CD back ups of the original photos.

Are you going to put them back-up?

I will probably post some recent stuff (Rec/All-Star) for the 2005 season and other's if I get good feedback.

I took some pictures of my team. Will you post them on the website?

Yes! You can do one of the following: Burn them to a CD and find me at the fields (not hard to do), ZIP them up and email to me, or if you have a lot then I can make an FTP account for you and you can just upload them there.

I saw a picture that I really like can you make me a print?

Yes. For a very reasonable charge, I do color corrections, and other enhancement to the photos. After that, I send them to a lab printer so that they'll look cool. sizes available are: 4x6, 5x7, 8x10, 12x18, 20x30. Just let me know the game and photo name.

Can you please take a photo off the site?

Yes. Just let me know what game it was (date) and the photo name and I'll take it off the site.

I've seen the posters that you have made do you still do those?

Yes. With a photo that you took or mine. Same thing goes for all the other novelty items: Team posters, composite posters, mugs, mouse pads, buttons, custom magazine covers, key chains, puzzles, wall papers (800x600, 1024x768, 1280x1024, 1600x1200), etc..

Will you take extra pictures of my daughter?

Yes. Just let me know who she is when I am at your game.

Some of the pictures really don't show any action; just them standing there.

Since nobody can tell when the 'action' will happen, I take the photos of the girls when I get the chance (usually batting stance) Once on base, then I can usually get something. Remember that I am usually shooting all day at the fields and have to conserve some space on my card.

What kind of camera is that and why is the lense so big?

It's a Canon 30D 8+ megapixel with a dual battery pack. The lense is a 70-200mm 2.8L (very fast lense) Since the camera has a 1.6 multiplier then it's like having a 112 - 320 lense. If I'm not allowed on the field then I use a 75-300 lense ( much slower lense ). The card I use has a capacity of 4gb ( about 1000+ pix)

Do you do this for a living?

No. I volunteer my time to the league. I program databases: Oracle/SQL and access, design websites using ASP, PHP, html and also do desktop, Palm and PocketPC handhelds. That's why the website has the interactivity that it does. I use SQL Server 2005 as the back-end and ASP.NET for the Presentation.
